LASIK eye surgery; Necessity, how to do it, side effects and benefits

LASIK, which stands for laser in situ keratomileusis, is a common surgery that can correct the vision of people with nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism.

This surgery is one of many vision correction surgeries that work by modifying the cornea, the clear part of the front of the eye, to focus light on the retina, at the back of the eye.

Why is eye LASIK performed?

When light is not focused on your retina as it should be, your vision becomes blurred.... The best eye specialists call this problem refractive error.... Its main types are:

  • Myopia (nearsightedness).... you see close objects clearly, but distant objects are blurred.
  • Camera (camera).... Distant objects are seen clearly, but closer objects are blurred.
  • Astigmatism.... In this case, due to the shape of the eyes, everything may be seen blurry.

Talk to your eye doctor about whether LASIK is the right procedure for you.... You should not have this surgery if you have the following conditions:

  • You are under 18 years of age
  • You are pregnant or breastfeeding
  • Take certain medicines
  • Your vision has changed a lot lately
  • Your cornea is thin or uneven
  • You have eye diseases such as glaucoma or dry eyes
  • You have other diseases such as diabetes, lupus or rheumatoid arthritis

Benefits of eye LASIK operation

  • It is more than 25 years old... About 96% of patients find their full vision after this operation.... An expansion can increase this number even more.
  • Its pain, if any, is very little.
  • There are no bandages or stitches.
  • If vision changes with age, the doctor can correct it.
  • You probably won't need or need glasses or contact lenses after LASIK.

Dangers of eye LASIK operation

Like any surgery, LASIK comes with risks such as the following:

  • This is a complicated and short procedure, but it may cause problems that affect your vision forever.... This is one of the reasons to choose a surgeon who has a lot of experience in these surgeries.
  • Rarely, after LASIK, you may lose your "best" vision, which was the highest degree of vision you could see when wearing glasses or contact lenses.
  • Most insurances do not cover LASIK.

Side effects of LASIK eye surgery

Some patients have eye pain in the first day or two after the LASIK procedure. Other side effects are rare and usually disappear with time. These include:

  • Blinking (with a lot of light)
  • Seeing halo around images
  • Difficulty driving at night
  • Occurrence of vision
  • Dry eyes
  • Eye scratching
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Small spots inside the eyes

How to prepare for eye LASIK?

Before your LASIK procedure you will meet with the coordinator or eye surgeon who will talk to you about how the surgery will be done and what to expect....they will ask about your medical history and do a full eye exam....this may include tests to measure corneal thickness, refraction and eye pressure....they may draw your cornea and dilate your pupil....they will answer any questions the surgeon may have...then you can Performing a surgery.

If you wear hard gas permeable contact lenses, do not wear them for at least 3 weeks before the evaluation.... Do not wear contact lenses for at least 3 days before the evaluation.. Be sure to bring your glasses so that the surgeon can check your prescription.

On the day of surgery, before you come in, eat a light meal and take all prescribed medications.... Do not wear eye makeup or bulky hair accessories that may interfere with your head position... If you don't feel well that morning, call your doctor's office to ask what to do.

What happens during LASIK eye surgery?

The doctor will give you drops to numb the eyes.... You can also ask for a mild sedative.

They use a tool called a microkeratome or femtosecond laser to create a thin flap in the cornea.. they remove it and use another laser to reshape the underlying tissue.. then they put the flap back in place and the surgery is over.

The LASIK procedure usually takes about 20 minutes....arrange to have someone drive you home after surgery.

What should be expected after LASIK eye surgery?

Although your eyes may not feel dry, your doctor will prescribe eye drops to prevent infection and inflammation as well as keep your eyes moist.

Your eyes will probably heal very quickly....most patients see better within a few days....call your doctor if you have any unusual problems or side effects.

Do not swim or use a hot tub for 2 weeks after surgery....You may need plastic eye shields to protect your eyes for a few days while you rest.

The doctor will tell you the time for the next visit.... The first visit will probably be a day or after the operation.

After LASIK, your vision can still change....you may have to wear reading glasses as you get older....More than 10% of people need a second LASIK procedure after some time to restore the effects.. But in general, 90% of patients have vision between 20/20 and 20/40 after LASIK operation.
