Orthodontics to treat severe crowding

Table of Contents

Dental crowding is one of the most common orthodontic problems that many patients face. In this case, the teeth don't have enough space to grow and be placed correctly in the jaw, and this causes them to overlap and become disorganized. Crowding, especially when it is severe, in addition to causing cosmetic problems, can negatively affect oral hygiene, gum health, and even the normal function of the jaws. Fortunately, today, various orthodontic methods can treat this problem in principle.

What is extreme crowding?

Severe crowding is a condition in which a large number of teeth grow in an inappropriate position due to lack of jaw space. These teeth may overlap, rotate or grow in an unnatural position. The severity of this problem is such that it cannot be corrected without specialized orthodontic treatment.

Causes of severe crowding

Different factors can cause crowding, the most important of which are:

  • Genetics and heredity: if one parent has a small jaw and the other parent has large teeth, the probability of crowding in the child is very high.
  • Premature loss of baby teeth: This causes the lateral teeth to move towards the empty space and create a lack of space for permanent teeth.
  • Disproportionate growth of the jaws: the jaw being small compared to the size of the teeth or the growth disorder of one of the jaws can be the basis of dental crowding.
  • Unfavorable childhood habits: finger sucking, long-term use of a pacifier or tongue pressure can change the arrangement of teeth.
  • Ignoring orthodontic problems in childhood: if the initial irregularities of the teeth are not treated in childhood, they will appear as severe crowding in adulthood.

Consequences of ignoring crowding

Ignoring crowding, especially in severe cases, can have many consequences:

  • increasing the risk of tooth decay due to difficulty in brushing and flossing
  • Creation of gum diseases such as inflammation, bleeding and gum recession
  • Bad breath caused by the accumulation of microbial plaque
  • Disturbance in chewing and digestion of food
  • Inappropriate pressure on the teeth and temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  • Decreased self-confidence and negative impact on social relationships due to the untidy appearance of teeth

Why is orthodontics the best treatment for severe crowding?

Severe crowding is not a problem that can be solved only with aesthetic methods such as laminate or coating. These methods only change the appearance of the teeth, while the main problem, which is the lack of space and structural disorder of the teeth, remains. Orthodontics is the most fundamental and best treatment for severe crowding by moving the teeth, creating a suitable space and harmonizing the jaws.

Orthodontic methods to treat severe crowding

The orthodontic specialist uses different methods based on the patient's condition, the severity of dental crowding and the person's age:

  • Fixed orthodontics: is the most common treatment method for severe crowding, which gradually straightens the teeth with brackets and wires.
  • Tooth extraction: In many patients, one or more permanent teeth may be extracted to create enough space.
  • Expanding the jaw (expander): In childhood and adolescence, it is possible to increase the width of the jaw with expander devices and prevent tooth extraction.
  • Invisible orthodontics (transparent aligner): For adults who care about appearance during treatment, using transparent aligners is a suitable option.
  • Orthognathic surgery: In very severe cases where only orthodontics is not enough, jaw surgery is performed together with orthodontics.

Duration of severe crowding treatment

The duration of treatment varies depending on the patient's condition, but it usually lasts between 18 and 36 months. The severity of the misalignment of the teeth, the type of chosen method and the level of cooperation of the patient (regular visits to the office and compliance with hygiene orders) play an important role during the treatment period.

Necessary care during treatment

To achieve the best results, it is necessary to observe the following points:

  • regular brushing and use of special orthodontic floss
  • Using antibacterial mouthwash
  • Regular visits to an orthodontist to adjust brackets or replace aligners
  • Avoid eating hard, sticky and sweet foods that can damage the orthodontic device
  • Completely following the doctor's instructions

Summary

Severe crowding is a serious but treatable problem. Treating this problem with orthodontics not only restores the beauty of the smile, but also improves oral health and prevents many future problems. Visiting an experienced orthodontic specialist and starting treatment at the right time will be the key to success in solving this problem.
