The peroneal nerve passes through the front of the foot and extends to the end of the foot and toes.. Many people who suffer from damage to the peroneal nerve suffer from foot drop. Actually, in a walking pattern, you can't bend your leg properly to take a step forward....sometimes when you walk, you lift one knee higher than the other. What is peroneal nerve damage?.. The peroneal nerve branches from the sciatic nerve and provides sensation to the front, sides, and top of the leg.. This nerve also controls the leg muscles that move the wrists and toes. Damage to the peroneal nerve can lead to numbness, pain, tingling, weakness and difficulty walking such as leg drop. What is the difference between superficial and deep peroneal nerve?.. Around the knee, the peroneal nerve is divided into two groups ### deep peroneal nerve This type is located in the inner part of the leg and on the foot bone.... This nerve also helps to control the functions inside the foot, including the big toe and the second toe. ### superficial peroneal nerve This type is also located in the outer part of the foot.... This nerve is responsible for creating sensation in the outer part of the leg and the upper part of the hip.... This nerve also helps to control the movement of other fingers. Which people suffer from peroneal nerve damage and leg drop?.. There is a possibility of peroneal damage for every person.. But if you have such a condition, there is a possibility of such a complication, including the following: - Anorexia nervosa - type 2 diabetes - Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease - Low body mass index - Inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus - knee or ankle injury Also, if you are sitting on your knees, your legs are cast and you are resting, the possibility of such a risk increases. The cause of damage to the peroneal nerve In most cases, this condition is caused by injuries to the knee, ankle, and leg, as follows: - ankle fracture - dislocation of the knee - knee fracture Usually 1 in 5 people who suffer from knee sprains injure the peroneal nerve. Also, some people get peroneal nerve damage after foot or knee surgery, such as knee replacement or hip replacement. Also, these injuries occur when something puts pressure on the peroneal nerve.... Sometimes, some people feel more pressure following these conditions: - foot plaster - tumor - Blood clotting What are the symptoms of damage to the peroneal nerve? One of the common symptoms you experience after an injury to this nerve is a drop in the hip..this injury occurs when you cannot bend your ankle to take a step forward...while you may lift one knee higher than the other when walking to lift your foot off the floor. Other symptoms of this condition include the following: - Feeling pain in the leg or leg - numbness in the leg or upper leg - Inability to bend the toes or ankles upwards - numbness in or above the leg - Pain in leg or leg How to diagnose To diagnose peroneal nerve damage and foot drop, the doctor will examine your foot and ask about your symptoms.... He may also use various tests as follows: - imaging tests such as CT scan, ultrasound or MRI - MRI test - electromyography - study of nerve conduction to measure electrical impulses through nerves How is peroneal nerve injury treated? The treatment that is considered for this disease is different according to the location of the injury and its severity. The doctor first starts his treatment with non-surgical solutions: - Using equipment such as splints, orthoses and braces will help you walk. - Physiotherapy improves strength and range of motion. - They teach you how to walk properly. Only in some rare cases when the patient does not recover with non-surgical methods, surgery is considered for him. prevention solutions There is no guaranteed way to prevent peroneal nerve damage and foot drop. But you can avoid the risk of severe injuries by keeping these points in mind: - Avoid sitting with legs crossed - reducing activities that put pressure on the knee behind or on the side of the knee - Treatment of leg injuries or leg numbness Convalescence period after peroneal nerve surgery If you've had surgery for peroneal nerve damage, recovery time is different for each person...you should limit your activities for the first six weeks after surgery for a full recovery. After six weeks, you can slowly increase the amount of your activities. The complete healing process takes about three to four months.
