Parenting is the process of raising, educating and training children from infancy to adulthood. This process includes providing the child's physical, emotional, social and educational needs for healthy growth and success in life. The main goal of parenting is to help the child grow and flourish in all aspects of life to become an independent, responsible and self-confident person.

The main aspects of parenting:

Parenting includes various aspects, each of which has an important role in raising a child:

  • Physical needs:

Parents are responsible for providing the child's physical needs such as food, clothing, sleep, and physical health. A healthy and safe environment is essential for a child's physical development.

  • Emotional needs: A child's emotional needs include affection, emotional security, attention and support. Children need to feel loved and cared for by their parents. This feeling helps them to feel confident and develop emotionally properly.
  • Educational needs: Parents should provide conditions where the child can learn and acquire the necessary skills for his future life. This includes encouraging learning, studying, and participating in educational activities.
  • Social Needs: Children need to learn how to interact with others, form healthy social relationships, and develop communication skills. Parents should help the child to learn these skills through interaction with family, friends and community.

Challenges of parenting:

Parenting comes with challenges and problems that parents must be prepared to face:

  • Time management: Parents must balance work, personal and parenting needs.
  • Behavioral problems: Some children may have behavioral problems that require special attention and educational solutions.
  • Developmental changes: Children's needs and behaviors change at different stages of development, and parents must adapt to these changes.
  • Social and cultural pressures: Sometimes societal pressures or cultural expectations can put pressure on parents and make parenting more difficult.
Parenting styles:

Parents have differences in their parenting styles that lead to different parenting styles. Four main parenting styles have been defined by Diana Baumrind, a prominent psychologist:

  • Authoritative parenting: This parenting style is a combination of affection and authority. Authoritative parents set rules for the child, but are also emotionally supportive and receptive. Characteristics of this style include establishing clear and logical rules, encouraging independence, and paying attention to the child's emotional needs. This style usually leads to the best results in the child's development, because children feel safe and loved, and also have a correct understanding of responsibility.

Authoritarian parenting (Authoritarian): In this style, parents set strict rules and expect the child to obey them without any discussion. Affection and emotional support are less in this style. Authoritarian parents emphasize control and discipline and pay less attention to the child's emotional needs or opinions. Children of this style may be academically successful, but often have emotional and social problems such as low self-confidence or fear of expressing their feelings.

  • Permissive parenting (Permissive): Permissive parents are very loving and supportive, but do not set specific rules or expectations for the child. In this style, the child has a lot of freedom and usually acts without restrictions. This style may lead to selfish behavior and inability to follow rules and regulations. Children of this style often have high self-confidence, but they may face discipline and self-control problems. Neglectful parenting: In this style, parents ignore the emotional and physical needs of the child and are less involved in raising and supporting the child. Children in these conditions usually have serious emotional, academic and social problems and feel worthless or helpless.

    Important parenting skills:

    • Effective communication: Open and effective communication between parents and children is very important. Parents should listen to the child, understand his feelings and concerns and communicate effectively with him. This type of communication helps the child feel valued and share his problems with the parents.
    • Support and encouragement: Parents should encourage their children to achieve their goals and provide emotional support when necessary. Encouraging to try and learn from failures causes the development of self-confidence and stability in the child. Setting boundaries and rules: Setting clear and logical rules and boundaries helps the child to learn appropriate behavior. These rules should be provided with explanations and reasons and at the same time be flexible.
    • Proper behavioral model: Parents should be a good role model for children. Children learn many skills and moral values by observing their parents' behaviors. Being honest, kind, and respectful to others can have a great positive impact on a child. Resolving conflicts: Conflicts between parents and children are inevitable, but parents must learn how to manage these conflicts constructively. Resolving conflicts peacefully shows the child that problems can be solved through dialogue and understanding.

The roles of parents in parenting:

    • Care role: providing the physical needs and safety of the child.
    • Educational role: Teaching life skills, values and moral principles to the child.
    • Support role: Emotional and psychological support to help the child's healthy mental and emotional development.
    • Role Model: Parents, as behavioral models, play an important role in the formation of children's behavior and attitudes.

    Conclusion:

Parenting is a complex and important task that requires constant effort, attention, and learning. Each parenting style has different effects on the child's development and it is important that parents choose the appropriate style according to the specific needs of their child. Effective communication, emotional support, setting boundaries and creating a suitable behavior model are the basic principles of successful parenting.
