Pregnancy asthma

Asthma is the most common lung disease during pregnancy. 8% of pregnant women have asthma. The condition of this disease during pregnancy is different in each disease. Many women worry about how changes during pregnancy will affect their disease and whether asthma treatment will harm their fetus. In general, the risk of inadequate asthma control is much greater than the risk of taking asthma control medications. Asthma treatment during pregnancy is satisfactory when the patient regularly takes medical care according to the prescribed schedule. Before becoming pregnant, women with asthma should consult a doctor. Women with asthma should continue taking asthma medications under medical supervision when they become pregnant. Abrupt discontinuation of asthma medications may be dangerous for the patient and the fetus. Asthma in women during pregnancy manifests itself in three states: 1/3 recover during pregnancy, 1/3 remain unchanged and 1/3 have worsening symptoms.

Among the women whose asthma worsens, in most cases the exacerbation of symptoms is observed between the 29th and 36th weeks of pregnancy. But usually the severity of asthma is less in the last month of pregnancy. Most cases of controlled asthma do not worsen during labor and delivery. In 1/3 cases of women whose asthma improves, this improvement continues throughout the entire pregnancy. In most cases, the severity of asthma symptoms during the first pregnancy will be similar to subsequent pregnancies.

Education, especially during pregnancy, can be reassuring and useful for women with asthma, and it is effective for the doctor and the patient in better managing symptoms, preventing attacks, and responding quickly to asthma attacks. This training includes the correct recognition of the signs and symptoms of this disease, avoiding the factors that trigger asthma and the proper use of authorized asthma control drugs.
