Proctitis** For about 30% of patients with ulcerative colitis, the disease begins as **ulcerative proctitis**. In this type, the inflammation is limited to the anus or rectum and usually affects less than six inches from the anus. This type of disease is relatively mild and is a small example of the big disease of ulcerative colitis. **2. Proctosigmoiditis** In this type, the inflammation is limited to the anus and the lower part of the intestine (**sigmoid**), the same area that is located above the anus. Symptoms of this type include bloody diarrhea, intestinal cramps and a constant feeling of defecation. You may also experience mild pain in the lower left side of your abdomen. **3. Colitis on the left** This type begins with persistent inflammation that starts from the anus and extends to the splenic flexure in the large intestine. Its symptoms include loss of appetite, weight loss, diarrhea, severe pain in the left side of the abdomen, and bleeding. **4. Pancolitis** This type of disease affects the entire intestine. Symptoms may include severe diarrhea, severe abdominal pain, severe cramps, and significant weight loss. Among the more serious complications of this type, it is possible to point out severe bleeding and even acute splitting of the intestine (toxic megacolon), which may require surgery in severe cases.
