Does orthodontics hurt? ===================================
This is one of the most common questions of people who intend to do orthodontics as a result of thinking about wires and brackets. Parents whose children need orthodontic treatment often ask, "Will braces hurt my child?" In this article, we try to answer this question as much as possible.
Experiencing pain and mild discomfort in orthodontic treatment is normal. Pain is a subjective response to stimuli during orthodontic treatment. which is considered one of the main reasons for leaving treatment. Orthodontic treatments such as placing brackets, placing fixed and movable devices and removing brackets cause mild pain to patients.
Orthodontic pain factors
Orthodontic pain depends on various factors such as the age, sex, pain threshold of each patient, the amount of force applied, the patient's mental state, the individual's stress and the patient's previous experiences of pain. In fact, the forces exerted on the teeth result in inflammatory reactions, including pain in the mouth caused by the movement of the teeth. This reaction leads to changes in the blood flow after applying orthodontic force.
The relationship between the mental health of the patient and the perception of orthodontic pain was investigated by some researchers. A person's "physiological and psychological sensitivity" can be the main factor in the severity of tissue discomfort caused by the physical impact of orthodontic devices. As a result, perceived pain in patients does not seem to be directly related to the orthodontic pain applied, but is also related to the individual's mental health.
In one study, approximately 95% of patients reported having pain during orthodontic treatment. Orthodontic pain starts within 4 hours. It gets worse in the next 24 hours and finally subsides in 7 days.
### **Causes of orthodontic pain**
Most children who undergo orthodontic treatment use fixed orthodontic brackets to fix their teeth. which is mainly made of steel, ceramic or porcelain. Due to the fact that the brackets can straighten the teeth through the application of mild pressure, some patients may experience sensitivity or redness of the gums. The amount of pain in each person depends on the treatment method and his physiology.
The use of brackets should not cause pain during orthodontic treatment. However, sometimes at the beginning of the process, the patient may feel a painful sensation in his mouth. Your child's braces may cause sore spots on the gums or lips at first. But the pain soon decreases and the patient's gums and lips recover during the treatment.
#### **Does orthodontic pain affect patients' satisfaction and their daily activities?**
It is a proven fact that orthodontic pain has a significant impact on patients' daily activities. Almost all patients who have undergone orthodontic treatment have difficulty chewing and eating food. Sometimes the patient may need to change his diet due to the difficulty of chewing and teeth movement. For example, eating hard food that requires more chewing is not recommended for some time. Because in order to achieve straight teeth, it is inevitable to endure a small amount of pain. In general, some patients experience orthodontic pain and some do not. Whenever you feel pain during orthodontic treatment, you should know that your teeth are moving towards the standard position that was planned by the orthodontist.
If you feel pain after orthodontics, or if you feel anxious or have any questions, see your doctor or dentist right away.
In case of any sores on the gums or lips, orthodontists recommend to use pain relievers in the first days of treatment, which are effective in solving this problem. It is important to read the instructions for the medicine to make sure it is right for you or your child and that it does not cause side effects for you or your child. If the sensitivity lasts longer than the stated time, the orthodontist can adjust the brackets for the patient's comfort and treat the sensitivity. In most orthodontic procedures, the patient must visit the dentist every 6 to 8 weeks to adjust the brackets. The patient receiving the service may experience slight discomfort after the adjustment, but should be informed that all these discomforts are part of the process of forming new, beautiful and smooth teeth. After the first adjustment or subsequent adjustments of brackets and wires, the pain should not last more than three days.
A person undergoing orthodontic treatment should eat soft foods for the first few days and avoid hard foods such as French toast or carrots. They should also cut their food into smaller pieces and then eat it. Articles
