Scientists say that the combination of exercise and consumption of omega-3 supplements reduces the severity of tooth infection and can be the secret of healthier teeth.

According to a new study, combining exercise with omega-3 supplements reduces inflammation and, as a result, reduces the severity of chronic tooth root infection.

According to New Atlas, this offers a relatively simple way to control these infections, which can lead to bone and tooth loss. Apical periodontitis or AP occurs when bacteria reach the tip of the tooth root and cause inflammation of the tissues around it. This condition can be caused by tooth decay, injury or after dental procedures, and if not treated, the inflammation can lead to the destruction and loss of the base bone and eventually the tooth falls out.

In a new study led by the State University of São Paulo (UNESP) in Brazil, researchers examined the effect of combining exercise, which is known to boost the body's immune response, and taking omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplements to treat AP.

Rogério de Castilho Jacinto, the author in charge of this study and a professor at Arasatuba School of Dentistry at São Paulo State University said: "Due to the chronic nature of this disease, patients may not notice it at all, but it can progress and lead to bone destruction and tooth loss."

Scientific websites regularly cover research on the health benefits of omega-3 consumption. Previous studies have shown that exercise prevents bone loss in mice with gum disease and also reduces the level of inflammatory substances called cytokines in mice, but until now no study has been done on the effect of physical activity on AP. Therefore, researchers investigated this issue and added "omega-3" supplements to complete the research.

Researchers induced AP in 30 mice and divided them into three groups. Two groups did moderate exercise (swimming) for one hour a day, five days a week for six weeks. In addition to swimming, one of these two groups received omega-3 supplements daily for 60 days. The third group was the control group without exercise and without supplements.

The immune response of the mice was evaluated by measuring the inflammatory markers tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-⍺) and interleukin-17 (IL-17), which are both inflammatory cytokines produced by activated immune cells.

The researchers observed that the lowest levels of these inflammatory markers were in the mice that both swam and received the supplement. In addition, this group had significantly fewer osteoclasts (cells responsible for bone resorption in diseases such as AP).

When CT images were taken of the mice's jaws, it was found that the group that both swam and received the supplement had the least loss of alveolar bone (the specialized bone in the jaw that supports the surrounding tooth roots).

Ana Paula Fernandes Ribeiro, researcher and senior author of this study said: In mice, exercise alone caused systemic improvement and regulation of the local immune response. Also, when combined with omega-3 supplements, it helped further reduce the destructive condition caused by endodontic disease.

Now it remains to be seen whether this effect will also be seen in humans.

To know if this applies to humans, we need a clinical study with a significant number of patients, Jacinto said. However, in addition to the many proven benefits of exercise and omega-3 consumption, this study is another important piece of evidence.

This study has been published in Scientific Reports.

Conclusion:

Researchers have found that combining regular exercise with omega-3 supplements can make a big difference in oral health. These two help the body's immune system to deal with chronic tooth root infections and prevent bone loss around the teeth.
