Pregnancy ultrasound

Many experts emphasize that women should have an ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries before trying to conceive in order to find out about their fertility status. Doing this ultrasound helps the doctor to get information about the health of the uterus, the presence of cysts, fibroids, and helps the patient to treat them. It is also possible to determine the time of ovulation, especially for women who have irregular menstrual periods or are infertile. In this uterine ultrasound, the number of follicles, their size and time, and the exact time on the 12th to 16th days of the menstrual cycle are checked.

What is pregnancy ultrasound?

High-frequency sound waves are used to image the fetus as well as the mother's reproductive organs, and the number of ultrasounds performed is also different in each pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasound monitors the normal development of the fetus and also helps with any possible problems.

In order to know the details of the fetal heart, complex scans such as three-dimensional, four-dimensional ultrasound and echocardiography are also performed.

If there is a problem with the ultrasounds, for example, the pregnant woman has high blood pressure or other diseases, or there is a possibility that the fetus is small, or there is a multiple pregnancy, more ultrasounds should be performed, and in most cases, the ultrasound is likely to be repeated at the end of pregnancy, between 28 and 36 weeks, with an interval of 2 to 3 weeks.

What are regular ultrasounds for?

As we mentioned above, it is better for the mother to perform ultrasound several times during her pregnancy, which includes the following:

Diagnosis of the gestational sac: The purpose of the first ultrasound during pregnancy is to diagnose the gestational sac, ectopic pregnancy, and molar pregnancy. This ultrasound is usually performed two or three weeks after the delay of menstruation in the first pregnancy, and the doctor examines the formation of the gestational sac and the heartbeat.

NT ultrasound: This ultrasound is usually performed in the 11th to 13th weeks of pregnancy and is performed as part of the first trimester screenings. In nt ultrasound, the doctor examines the amount of fluid behind the neck of the fetus and its thickness, and as a result, the purpose of this ultrasound is the possibility of chromosomal disorders such as Down syndrome and trisomy 18.

Anomalous ultrasound: Anomalous ultrasound is one of the ultrasounds that are usually prescribed in the second trimester of pregnancy, i.e. between 16 and 18 weeks. In this ultrasound, structural defects of the fetus and growth problems are carefully examined. Also, the body parts of the fetus should be checked for any possible problems in the heart, abdomen, spine, face and other parts. In anomalous ultrasound, they check the condition of the placenta and its location and the umbilical cord of the case, and they can find out the gender of the fetus.

Last ultrasound: This ultrasound is performed after the 28th week of pregnancy, when the growth rate of the fetus and its weight are examined in relation to the age of the fetus, and also the length of the bones around the head, thigh and around the abdomen are estimated, and the weight of the fetus is estimated and compared to the appropriate weight for the week of pregnancy.

Ultrasound Pregnancy which should be done on special occasions

In the normal ultrasound performed during pregnancy, certain things may be seen that should be paid more attention to ensure the absence of any problems. In such cases, the doctor may prescribe other special ultrasounds for the person These ultrasounds include:

Doppler ultrasound

In the normal ultrasound performed by pregnant women, if the doctor feels a problem in the heart or blood flow of the fetus, for a more detailed examination and diagnosis of the problem, he may prescribe a Doppler ultrasound. By performing this ultrasound, the doctor can carefully examine the blood flow of the fetus and any type of cardiovascular problem can be detected in the fetus. It is also possible if there are cases such as twins or multiples, abnormal growth of the fetus, examination of the placenta, production of Rh negative antibodies in the mother's blood, a history of miscarriage or loss of a baby at birth.

Echocardiography of the heart

Usual ultrasound that is performed in the first three months of pregnancy, the doctor may detect the possibility of a problem in the fetal heart, in which case a fetal heart echo is prescribed. It can be said that in this ultrasound, the blood flow in the arteries and veins of the fetus is examined. One of the most important uses of heart echocardiography is that fetal heart problems that may exist, such as the presence of a hole in the heart and problems in the blood arteries, can be detected.

Biophysical ultrasound

This type of ultrasound consists of several things that check the health of the fetus. In this ultrasound, the number of fetal heartbeats (non-stress test) is integrated with the fetal ultrasound in order to correctly assess the heart rate, breathing, body movements of the fetus, muscle stiffness and the amniotic volume of the fetus.

Three-dimensional and four-dimensional ultrasound

Usually, this ultrasound is done by most pregnant women because in 3D ultrasound, you can see a 3D image of the fetus and finally get a photo of him, and this type of ultrasound provides the doctor with more information about the diagnosis of abnormalities.

In four-dimensional ultrasound, it is possible to make a video of the fetal movements by putting the pictures together. In other words, it can be said that 3D and 4D scans are as reliable as regular ultrasounds, and this type of ultrasound is not recommended for having photos or videos of the fetus because by doing this, one exposes the fetus to unnecessary ultrasounds. Similarly, the use of ultrasound waves for a period of time between 45 minutes and one hour is longer than the safety limits and may be dangerous. Because this type of ultrasound shows more details from different angles, it helps doctors in making diagnoses and making decisions about plans after birth.

How to prepare for pregnancy ultrasound?

In order to perform pregnancy ultrasound, the bladder must be full.

During the ultrasound, the person is placed on the examination bed and the technician applies ultrasound gel on your abdomen and pelvis, and then places the probe of the device on the gelled part, so that the image can be seen on the monitor.

Most of the time, during the ultrasound, the person is asked to move a bit or to hold his breath for a few moments.

The gel is liquid on the body, so you have to remove the gel from your body before you put on your clothes.

Last word:

In this article, we mentioned most of the cases and ultrasounds that the mother should do during pregnancy, which are done to control the health of the fetus and the mother, and these ultrasounds are done in two categories, normal and special. In a special ultrasound, if the mother and the fetus have a special problem, so that the problem can be solved.
